What Millionaires Won’t Buy: 17 Things They Refuse to Waste Money On

Pete Law

It’s common for people to assume that, upon becoming a millionaire, your budget would change completely, never thinking twice about spending some cash–even if the item was unnecessary. However, the reality of being a millionaire is quite different, because, at the end of the day, such people have only become so rich by being careful with their money. Sure, they’ll be more likely to splurge on luxuries that we regular folk probably wouldn’t, but in general, even millionaires won’t waste their money on the following unnecessary purchases.

Overpriced Designer Clothes

It’s true that millionaires might invest in a few quality designer clothing pieces, but typically, they tend to steer clear of excessively priced items plastered with flashy logos. Instead, they much prefer timeless styles and durable fabrics over following fleeting trends, because their style isn’t about showing off wealth, but about looking and feeling comfortable. After all, nobody needs a £1,000 T-shirt to feel good!

Fancy Coffee Chains

This might be hard to believe, but forming a daily £4 cappuccino habit from the chain café down the road is a habit that most millionaires often skip. Think about it–£4 a day for 300 days of the week would equal £1,200 pound, a sacrifice that no financially savvy person would be willing to make. Instead, millionaires often prefer to brew their coffee at home, perhaps investing that £1,200 into a fancy machine that will last them years.

New Cars

Sure, driving the latest car model off the showroom floor might seem tempting, but millionaires are fully aware of how fast cars depreciate in value. Instead, they tend to opt for nearly new or used vehicles that offer the same luxury and performance, but without the hefty price tag. At the end of the day, they recognize that a car is a tool, not a status symbol.

Expensive Jewellery

As with designer clothing, millionaires might own a few investment pieces of jewellery, but in general, they won’t see the value in spending big on trendy, high-priced jewellery. Rather, they’ll often stick to simple, classic designs or even skip jewellery altogether, because, for them, it’s less about impressing others through looks and more about impressing through their skill and hard work.

Endless Subscription Services

Even if you think this sounds unnecessary, millionaires tend to review their recurring expenses carefully, and unnecessary subscription services are often the first to go. Streaming platforms, beauty boxes, and magazine deliveries are often barely used, so why would they continue paying for them just because they’re rich? As with daily coffees, they’re financially savvy enough to know that £10 a month here and there quickly adds up.

Trendy Tech Gadgets

When a new gadget hits the market, it’s rarely the millionaires racing to queue for it, but the average consumers. Why? Well, rich people see the value in patiently waiting for prices to drop or skipping unnecessary upgrades altogether. Overall, they’ll focus on functionality over keeping up with the latest tech trends, sticking to tools that truly enhance their lives.

Luxury Branded Water

It’s a common misconception that millionaires are the only people who buy luxury branded water. Ironically, it’s often quite the opposite, with fancy bottles of branded water with extravagant price tags rarely being found on a millionaire’s shopping list. In fact, they often prefer reusable bottles filled with tap water or filtered water at home, because they’re smart enough to know that paying a premium for something that’s essentially free is plain stupid.

Impulsive Holiday Purchases

Another thing that millionaires refuse to waste their money on is holiday souvenirs, novelty items, and overpriced knick-knacks at tourist hotspots. Through experience, they’ve learned that it’s better to create memories rather than clutter, spending their hard-earned cash on experiences rather than items that collect dust back home.

Lavish Weddings

Contrary to popular belief, millionaires tend to pass up on over-the-top extravagance for weddings. Frankly, spending six figures on a single day isn’t seen as wise when the same amount could fund a future home or investments. So, they’ll focus on what the day represents rather than the showiness of it all, saving the money for their future instead.

Flashy Home Décor

It should go without saying that millionaires don’t see the point in wasting money on impractical, showy décor items that scream luxury but serve no real purpose. Sure, they’ll put money into functional, high-quality furniture and design pieces with lasting appeal, but you won’t catch them trying to show off, as they understand how superfluous this is.

Expensive Pet Accessories

While they love their furry friends just as much as you do, millionaires rarely indulge in gold-plated collars or diamond-studded bowls, as you might have expected them to. Instead, practical, comfortable, and safe items for their pets take priority because to them, showing love isn’t about flashy pet gear but providing the best care and companionship.

High-Fee Credit Cards

Many millionaires are wary of credit cards with annual fees that don’t provide equivalent value. Understandably, they far prefer cards with rewards or benefits that align with their lifestyle rather than paying extra for unnecessary perks. When it comes down to it, if it doesn’t offer a clear advantage, they’ll pass.

Trendy Fitness Classes

Believe it or not, joining the latest high-priced fitness craze doesn’t always appeal to millionaires. In fact, they’re much more likely to invest in practical home gym equipment, attend reasonably priced gyms, or even stick to free outdoor activities like running. Yes, fitness is a priority of the rich, but that doesn’t have to break the bank.

Overpriced Real Estate

It’s easy to assume that millionaires would invest in the most expensive real estate that their bank accounts could handle, but in reality, they know the difference between paying for a home they’ll love and overspending for bragging rights. Furthermore, they’ll typically have experience in owning property, so they’ll know that it’s smarter to choose properties that suit their needs without going overboard on extravagant features they’ll rarely use.

Spa Treatments

You might dream of becoming a millionaire one day, finally being able to treat yourself to weekly spa treatments. Sure, millionaires might occasionally enjoy the indulgence of a massage or facial, but overpriced, trendy treatments are rarely on the cards. On the other hand, they’ll be happy to spend money on skincare products and self-care routines that they can manage at home, knowing that feeling relaxed doesn’t have to come with an eye-watering price tag.

Fast Fashion

As you no doubt already assumed, the rich don’t bother with the cheap, poorly made clothing of fast fashion, as it tends to fall apart after a few wears, and why would they want that? This doesn’t mean they’re splurging on high-end fashion, either; they’re just more inclined to buy fewer, higher-quality items that stand the test of time.

Premium Flights for Short Trips

Last but not least, don’t be fooled into thinking that millionaires will pay for first-class or premium flights wherever they might be heading. On the contrary–for shorter journeys, they’ll often stick to economy, preferring to save their money for long-haul comfort or other meaningful experiences. Think about it–a couple of hours in economy isn’t a big deal when weighed against the hundreds of extra pounds!
