Use a Cold Water Bath

The quickest way to defrost meat without a microwave is by using a cold water bath. Place the meat in a leak-proof plastic bag to prevent water from seeping in.

Submerge the bagged meat in a large bowl or sink filled with cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes to maintain a consistent temperature and prevent bacteria growth.

This method is faster than leaving the meat in the refrigerator and safer than using warm or hot water. Small cuts of meat like chicken breasts or pork chops can thaw in as little as 30 minutes, while larger cuts may take a couple of hours.

Keep the Meat Submerged

To ensure the meat defrosts evenly, weigh it down with a plate or bowl to keep it fully submerged in the water. If parts of the meat are left above the water, they may not thaw as quickly, leading to uneven defrosting.

Avoid Warm Water and Direct Heat

Slice Larger Cuts into Smaller Pieces

If you’re defrosting a larger cut of meat and need it quickly, consider cutting it into smaller portions while it’s still partially frozen. This will increase the surface area exposed to the water, speeding up the defrosting process.
