How to Fix Scratches on Wood Furniture in Seconds

Pete Law

Scratches on wood furniture are unsightly, but they don’t have to be permanent. Whether it’s a deep gouge or a small surface scratch, there are quick fixes you can use to restore your furniture’s appearance in no time.

Use a Walnut or Crayon

For light scratches, a simple walnut or a matching-colored crayon can work wonders. Rub the walnut or crayon over the scratch in a circular motion. The natural oils from the walnut or the wax from the crayon will fill in the scratch, making it less noticeable. Afterward, buff the area with a soft cloth to blend it in with the rest of the surface.

Apply a Wood Marker or Stain Pen

Wood markers or stain pens are great for fixing deeper scratches. Choose a color that matches your furniture, then apply the marker to the scratch. Let it sit for a few minutes to absorb, then wipe away any excess with a cloth.

These pens are available in different shades, so you can find one that matches your furniture perfectly.

Try a DIY Vinegar and Olive Oil Solution

Mixing vinegar and olive oil in equal parts creates a natural solution for light surface scratches. Dip a soft cloth into the mixture and rub it into the scratch. The vinegar will help clean the area, while the olive oil will blend the scratch into the surrounding wood.

This method works best on minor surface scratches.

Use Wood Filler for Deep Scratches

For deeper scratches or gouges, wood filler is your best bet. Choose a filler that matches your furniture’s color. Apply it to the scratch with a putty knife, smoothing it out until the surface is even.

Once dry, sand the area lightly and apply a matching wood stain to blend it with the rest of the furniture.

Finish with a Polish or Wax

After treating the scratch, finish with a good quality wood polish or wax. This will restore the shine and help protect the surface from future damage. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth and buff in circular motions.
