Traveling broadens our horizons, introducing us to new cultures, landscapes, and (of course) incredible food! In fact, the promise of new and exciting cuisines can be a primary motivator when traveling abroad, but with so many tourist traps and chain restaurants lining popular destinations, how can you ensure you get the authentic culinary experiences you desire? This article explains how to eat like a local wherever you go.

Step Away from the Tourist Trail

Popular tourist areas are notorious for catering to international palates, often sacrificing authenticity for familiarity and a broad menu that offers a great deal of choice with very little authenticity and disappointing quality. They also tend to be overpriced due to their convenient, busy locations.

Instead, explore back streets and lesser-known locations, like remote villages or quiet neighborhoods, where you’re more likely to find local restaurants serving traditional fare. This may require some planning, so research local specialties and popular dishes beforehand. Don’t be afraid to get lost (safely, of course) and stumble upon hidden gems!

Look for Street Food

Street fenders selling local food specialties often offer surprisingly delicious and authentic on-the-go meals and are a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the local culture. From sizzling stir-fries in Southeast Asia to piping hot churros in Spain and delicious French crepes, street vendors offer a delicious and affordable way to sample local favorites.

Be adventurous, but prioritize hygiene—look for carts with steady crowds and fresh ingredients, and avoid any food prepared with dirty cookware or by someone who looks unwashed. Don’t hesitate to ask your friendly hostel staff or locals for recommendations on reputable vendors.

Hit the Markets

Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and aromas of a bustling local market. Freshly caught seafood, exotic fruits, and local spices are all commonly found here, and they are fascinating, delicious places for any curious foodie to explore.

Sample seasonal produce, chat with vendors about their offerings, and pick up ingredients to create your own dishes at your accommodation inspired by local cuisine and fresh ingredients that you can’t find at home. Markets are also a great opportunity to practice your bargaining skills, which is a fun cultural experience in many parts of the world!

Embrace the Midday Meal

Lunch is the most important meal of the day in many cultures. Smaller restaurants might offer special lunch menus with traditional dishes at a fraction of the dinner price, and this is a perfect chance to try something new without breaking the bank. Just make sure you’re hungry enough to enjoy the experience fully—lunch in some countries might be more substantial than you expect!

Don’t Fear the Unknown

Local dining customs can be a fascinating and fun part of traveling abroad and experiencing local cultures. Research basic etiquette beforehand, like using chopsticks in Asia or the appropriate utensils in Ethiopia.

Embrace the unfamiliar, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. If everyone is sitting on the floor, don’t ask for a chair! Ask questions, be patient with yourself, and enjoy the process of learning a new way to dine.

Ask the Locals

The best recommendations often come from the people who know the city best—the locals! Strike up a conversation with your hotel concierge, friendly shopkeepers, or even fellow travelers. Ask them about their favorite local haunts, hidden gems, and must-try dishes. You might be delighted by their unique and delicious recommendations.

Go with the Flow

Part of the charm of eating like a local is being open to surprises. Don’t be afraid to deviate from your meticulously planned itinerary and follow your nose (or your stomach!) to a local eatery that piques your interest. Be open to trying new ingredients and unfamiliar dishes, and don’t just stick to the same old choices you would normally select while at home. You never know; you might discover a new favorite flavor!
