How to Clean Your Oven Without Harsh Chemical

Pete Law

Cleaning the oven is one of those chores we tend to put off, mainly because traditional oven cleaners are often filled with harsh chemicals that leave behind strong smells.

However, there’s good news: you can clean your oven just as effectively using natural, non-toxic methods that are safe for both you and your kitchen.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are powerhouse cleaning agents that work wonders on even the toughest stains. To start, remove the oven racks and mix a paste of baking soda and water.

Spread the paste generously across the bottom of your oven, focusing on areas with stubborn grime or burnt-on food. Let it sit for at least 12 hours, or overnight if possible.

After the paste has had time to work its magic, wipe it away with a damp cloth. For any remaining spots, spray white vinegar over the surface.

The vinegar will react with the baking soda, creating a fizzy, cleaning action that helps lift any remaining dirt. Wipe it down again until the oven is clean.

Clean the Racks Separately

While your baking soda mixture is working on the inside of your oven, take the time to clean the oven racks separately. You can soak them in a bathtub or large sink filled with hot water and dish soap. Let them sit for a few hours, then use a scrubbing brush or sponge to remove any baked-on grime.

Rinse and dry them thoroughly before placing them back in the oven.

If your racks are particularly dirty, adding a cup of vinegar to the soaking water can help loosen any tough residue.

Wipe Down the Door

The glass door of the oven can quickly become covered in grease and food splatters. To clean it, simply use the same baking soda paste you used inside the oven. Apply the paste to the glass, let it sit for about 20 minutes, and then wipe it away with a damp cloth.

If you notice streaks or spots left behind, you can buff them out with a mixture of vinegar and water. Spray the solution onto the glass and wipe with a microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish.

With these natural cleaning methods, you can keep your oven clean without relying on harsh chemicals. Baking soda, vinegar, and a little elbow grease are all you need to get your oven looking like new—no harsh smells or toxic ingredients required!
