17 Religious Principles That Just Don’t Fit In With Our Modern Lives

Pete Law

Society has evolved significantly over the years, with many traditional norms being redefined to better fit modern values. As acceptance of diverse backgrounds, sexualities, and gender identities has grown, some religious teachings may no longer align with today’s way of life.

Interfaith Dialogue

We come from different faiths and backgrounds and the only way we can work together is to respect each other’s beliefs. Discriminatory attitudes among some groups cause conflict. Leaders need to promote tolerance and remember that we have many religions but can live in harmony.

Science and Faith

Science has taught us so much, but sometimes it contradicts what some religions say. Things concerning life after death, the origin of life, and some religions don’t even agree with modern medicine. It’s important to find a balance between what we know from science and what we believe from religion.

Abortion Rights

Choosing whether to and when to have a child is a woman’s right. The New York Times reported that many women have abortions because they want to have children at an older age and with more financial stability. Some people have abortions for health reasons.

Social Justice Issues

Dealing with social injustices such as racism, LGBTQ+ rights, poverty, and minorities is very crucial. Changes need to be made to give everyone a fair chance to advance their lives. Many churches don’t advocate for this, and at times even encourage it with special treatment given to people of higher social class.

Gender Roles and Equality

Religion teaches that men and women have certain roles in society. A man is seen as the head of the household and a woman as the support. This puts limitations on what women can do and these traditional gender roles are challenged. Women now fight for equal rights and opportunities.

Views on Sexuality

Clearly Reformed reports that it’s considered a sin to have sex before marriage, and these are quotations from the Bible. There are no exceptions for age or relationship status. This doesn’t fit well with most people because they consider sexual chemistry very important before committing to marrying someone.

Environmental Stewardship

Climate change is rapidly increasing, and we need to fight it from all fronts to preserve the planet. Issues concerning the environment aren’t usually a big priority in religion. They’re mainly focused on how people behave and prepare for life in heaven.

Capital Punishment

In some cases, religious beliefs support punishing people with death. This can be controversial because it goes against ideas of forgiveness and second chances. It might not consider if someone can change or make up for what they did wrong. It also marginalizes some groups who are treated unfairly by the justice system.

Wealth and Poverty

Making money and being wealthy are sometimes associated with being blessed. It makes those who haven’t succeeded feel like they did something wrong for God not to give them good things. It also ignores the realities and economic disadvantages people face.

Mental Health Stigma

The WHO reported that 970 million people around the world are affected by mental illnesses. They require assistance from mental health professionals, and there is nothing wrong with it. Some religions stigmatize mental illness, telling people to pray harder and that they will be more at peace if they connect with God.

Freedom of Expression

It should be encouraged for everyone to speak their minds. We all have different ways of thinking and views on various things. Forcing people to think in a certain way that is regarded as right limits growth and creativity in communities.

Education Policies

Knowledge is power, and schools should be able to teach people about all the realities of life. Some religions seem to put restrictions on their education curricula, limiting the inclusion of topics like sex and evolution. This can make it hard for students to learn about the world around them.

Family Planning

Planning for your family is very crucial for the well-being of everyone involved. It’s best to have children at a time when you feel prepared both physically and financially. Opposition to the use of family planning methods can lead to many consequences, including abuse and neglect of the child.

Evolution and Creationism

Several studies have shown scientific evidence of evolution. Despite continued proof, religious teachings still reject it, preaching the story of creation by God. This was easier to accept before the spread of secular education. Now it is taught in all schools and it’s a struggle to fit the two together.

Medical Ethics

Sometimes, what religions say about medical treatments can conflict with what doctors think is best. This can make it hard for patients to get the care they need. Religious principles may influence views on abortion, end-of-life care, and genetic engineering, making it hard to do even when necessary for one’s health.

LGBTQ+ Rights

Gender identity and sexual orientation are still very tough topics in religious settings. Most churches don’t recognize same-sex marriages, and people in the LGBTQ+ community are still discriminated against. This stigmatization pushes many individuals away from religion, in addition to their lack of support for anti-discrimination laws.

Modern Technology

Technology is a big part of life and has created a lot of improvements in the way we communicate and work. Some religions might be hesitant to embrace new technologies because they fear they could lead people away from their faith. They see it as something that exposes people to secular influences.
