Books or magazines are essential to keep you entertained during downtime or long journeys. According to Condé Nast Traveller, “e-readers are an essential travel accessory for bookworms. They are so much lighter than even one paperback book, and let you bring as many options as you want along for the ride.”

Daily Medications and Health Supplies

The CDC recommends you pack all your prescription medication, a selection of over-the-counter medications for common illnesses and pains, a first aid kit, hand sanitizer, and all your health documents. Doing this can help you be prepared for the worst and potentially avoid a visit to the hospital disrupting your trip.

Essential Travel Documents

If you are traveling internationally, it’s important to make sure your passport has at least six months of validity beyond the date of your return, or you could risk not being allowed into the country. It’s also a good idea to have printed copies of itineraries in case you lose your phone.

Comfortable Footwear

Sightseeing can involve a lot of walking, so it’s important to pack comfortable walking shoes or sneakers so you don’t get blisters. Flip flops or lightweight sandals are also a good idea for quick trips to the beach, and don’t forget smarter shoes for restaurants and evening wear.

Appropriate Clothing

Make sure to do your research on your destination’s climate so that you can pack weather-appropriate clothing. Some cultures may also have dress codes for formal situations or spiritual reasons, so it’s important to research well. A lightweight jacket is a great travel investment for those unexpectedly cool evenings or air-conditioned venues.

Toiletries

You’ll want to pack some essential toiletries in case your accommodation doesn’t provide them or you want your own specific products. Include a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss; travel-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash; and don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent too.

Money

Some small shops, restaurants, and venues don’t accept card payments, so it’s always a good idea to have a small amount of local currency on you. Make sure to check if your bank charges for overseas transactions, because this can become costly if you’re away for a while.

Electronics

Pack your smartphone, camera, and any other small devices you want to take with you. Remember to take accessories such as chargers, batteries if needed, and memory cards. Finally, depending on where you’re traveling, you may want to take a couple of travel adapters or converters to make sure you can use all your devices safely while overseas.

Personal Identification

If you’re planning on taking any domestic flights or hiring a car at your destination, you’ll need to remember your driver’s license. With all forms of ID, it’s a good idea to take photocopies or good-quality images in case they get lost or stolen while you’re away.

Snacks

Packing non-perishable snacks such as nuts or granola bars will help you keep your energy levels up. Good Housekeeping says, “The best snacks should have a combination of protein and fiber to keep you fueled and satisfied. Try to aim for about four grams each of protein and fiber, and keep added sugar to a minimum.”

Travel Comfort Items

Long flights or bus rides can be uncomfortable, so a neck pillow and eye mask will help you get the most rest you can. A lightweight blanket helps, too. You can also reduce noise from others around you with noise-canceling headphones or earplugs.

Hygiene Supplies

It’s important to keep hygienic while you’re away, especially in crowded areas or high-traffic spots such as the airplane. Make sure you pack hand sanitizer and travel-sized disinfectant wipes for quick surface cleans on planes, in hotels, or in eating areas.

Bags and Packing Organizers

If you’re going to be moving around on your trip, lightweight luggage is essential. You can also use packing cubes to maximize space and help keep your clothes organized. The Telegraph says, “Whether it’s big waterproof jackets for your next hiking adventure or gym leggings for a sporty getaway, everything can fit inside one of these handy contraptions.”

Travel Insurance Documents

When you take out your travel insurance, you should be careful to choose a policy that covers you for the destinations you’re visiting, any activities you’ll be doing, and lost or stolen belongings. Be sure to have this information stored somewhere easily accessible should you need it; this could be on your smartphone or printed out.

Backup Supplies

Being far away from home can mean extra disruptions if something gets lost, stolen, or broken while you’re away. Help to plan for this by packing backups for the things you need the most. This could be glasses or contact lenses, batteries or power banks, or a camera.

Language and Communication Tools

If you’re traveling to a non-English speaking country, language translation apps or guidebooks can help you break down communication barriers and enjoy the culture of the place you’re visiting. You should also check if your mobile operator allows free roaming, or you may face an unexpected bill when you get home.

Environmental Care Items

It’s just as important to look after the environment when you’re traveling as it is when you’re at home. Pack a reusable shopping bag to save plastic, consider opting for biodegradable toiletries, or try out a portable solar charger for recharging your devices on the go.

Emergency Preparedness

You never know when there’s going to be an emergency, and unfortunately, it could be on your trip. Preparing for this may just help you out. Consider packing a flashlight in case of any power outages, a whistle or personal alarm to attract attention in emergency situations, and a waterproof bag to protect your documents and electronics from damage.
